Rat Hunting Glens

Bailielands Cailin & Bailielands Sioda hunting for rats around the poultry pens.

Where our Buff Orpingtons, the big yellow ones and French Copper Black Marans ( layers of chocolate brown eggs) in the smaller wire run are kept.

This year I sold 3 pairs of young Orpingtons in 15 minutes making 120 euro in total at this months local poultry sales, couldn't get over it. Plus I heard one of my pairs resold on the day for 60 euro, blimey!

Got first years batch of buff eggs in incubator now and also 6 new Maran eggs I bought in ebay to freshen up my stock, also going to do an egg trade deal for new blood Buffs with a fellow buff breeder in Mayo. Its all go, chickens are great:)

Cailin & Sioda do very well catching any rats around, you know when a rat was caught by a glen and not a jack russell as the russell caught ones may be a little mauled, the glen caught ones look very intact except for bugging eyes as glens squeeze them and don't shake them. Grim but useless bit of info there.

A long time ago when I was maybe 16 or 17 I was on holidays with Mum & Dad one summer and we were touring the Ring Of Kerry. I can't remember the town right now but we were coming down a steep hillside into it when on the roadside was the quaintest Irish cottage and little garden with a huge billygoat in it.

We stopped to take a photo as Dad loved this sort of thing and the owner of the cottage came out a hoary bear of a man. In the course of chitchat as you do he told us he was a water diviner! And he took out the hazel rod and demonstrated by walking over a buried stream in his garden.

All very well but then he let me have a go, nothing and then Dad, bang! Straight down! Come on says he I'll help you and he took one leg of the branch and I the other and we walked side by side across the grass. And on the mysterious spot I saw and felt the wood twist in my hand like a living thing! I will never forget it, bang! Straight down, Awesome.

That was that and many years later I used a homemade pendulum to deal with a difficult situation I did not consciously know what to do with. The answers it gave me transformed my life and today I felt a sudden surge of curiousity for the subject and went to Mr Google for some answers :)

Saturday Walk

Saturday Peter, Bruce the hound mix, Cara ( December Dawn ) and I went to Sligo for a day out. These pics were taken along the riverside walk near Cleveragh Retail Park, a lovely little walk along side birch and oak plantings standing in swamp-like ground, very unusual :)

We felt like we should keep an eye out for alligators, we did meet some swans though.

later on we went to Strandhill, had a picnic and a walk just as the sun was setting and the moon rising over Knocknarea, not enough light for fotos but it was a memorable sight on halloween :)

On The Miners Way

Here is Peter and new arrival Bruce at Scardan Waterfall outside Drumkeeran County Leitrim.

These pictures were taken on the Arigna Miners Way a hiking trail outside Carrick On Shannon in County Leitrim. The track we are walking on was taken by coal miners and now in this day and age is flanked by massive wind turbines, kind of fitting isn't it :)

New arrival to kennels Bruce came yesterday from Clonsilla Dublin. He is a hound mix i would guess at a harrier/jack russell mix and is not working out in an urban life style.

He is to be trained for barking in cover and if he is good at it he will do very well.

So Peter and I took him out hill climbing with us to get to know him. He is a great dog quite well behaved and a lovely lovely nature. His last owner has done very well with him but accepts he could do better in a working environment.

During our walk he was tracking sheep that had run up the road ahead of us and in every way was using his nose to check out the world. Don't worry we had him on an extending lead :)

He was very good last night we kept him in the house it seemed mean to put him into kennels and he was clean and quiet. Great dog.

We introduced him to Muttwee this morning and they got on quite well. Maybe they will make a good team :)

Sunday morning we were up early to take 2 of cailin's daughters to Boyle to begin their journey home to america with their new mums:)

After this Peter, Cailin and myself headed for Sligo to make a day of it.

We visited Drumcliffe the burial place of WB Yeats, walked Tullan Strand at bundoran, Co. Donegal and climbed Knocknarea mountain to the tomb of Queen Maedbh of Connaught. Excellent day out.

Lucky Day Touring Around Lough Key

The water is soooo cold in the well and its a lovely spot, the grave of Turlough O'Carolan the last Irish bard is in the graveyard across the road.

Definitely coming back to this well, love it.

A Crannog in Lough Meelagh a few miles up from the well, the crannog is an artificial island people actually lived on, some islands had people living on them until the 17th century.

Court Tombs were built around 2500 to 3500 b.c. wow!

Just look at it there set in the middle of that lovely forest.

We had a lovely day out just touring around the far side of Lough Key for a change.

The next pictures were taken in Elphin at the windmill, yes windmill:) 18th century restored windmill with matching mill house cottage.

Next stop is on the Arigna Mining Trail at the woodland walk to Lake Dereen, a really lovely walk with mostly beech woodlands with some ash, rowan and oak very very nice, riddled with deer trails. Cara got quite excited and needed watching

We went out for a drive just looking for sites of historical interest to stop and check out, great fun I guess I'm really lucky to have such a history buff for a son, he LOVES it in school and out, reads Terry Deary 'Horrible History' books like other kids read comics :)

Its that time of year again, the start of the shooting season and folks are looking for a good dog barking in cover. This year I have reared 4 young dogs for barking in cover, all beagle x fell terriers, Cooper a large black & tan, Rusty a large red dog, Blackie a small... er black dog and Choccy a small.. er chocolate bitch :)

All are 12 months now this very month, recalling well to the whistle at home and away, in and out of the trailer on command, will wear a harness and drag line or run free, and are searching cover on command. This week I will introduce them individually to working a live scent and hopefully get a chase out of them.

The pictures here are of Harriet one of my older black & white Russells who is rather good at beating cover and who will help me show the pups what to do out on the boglands. With her is some of her beaglex pups bred specifically for barking in cover last year and who are now starting their first season down in County Cork.

Walk In the Woodlands May 2009

Here are some pics I found on the computer of Toby taken in May 2009. Toby is better known as Bailiebroc Freddy's Boy and is my foundation sire for my jacks.

Bred by Mr Phil Thame of Strokestown, County Roscommon, Toby is out of Clooncagh Squeek and by Darkwood Max. Squeek/ Squirt is a handy little tan/white bitch at 10" who has worked hard for Phil her whole life over and under ground. She is now 9 years old and still giving hell :)

Squeek/Squirt is from Ballaghadereen and her dam is from a line of terriers kept by the Terrierman for the Galway Blazers, Tom Mc Donagh.

Darkwood Max is owned by Mr. Gerry Donughue a well known gundog man, exhibitor and judge. Both Max and Squeek are Interim generation 1 making Toby / Bailebroc Freddy's Boy Interim generation 2.

And this year my kennel went out of the Interim register and onto full pedigree with Goliath and Coco's pups :) born 15th of may 2009. Around the time these photos were taken :)

Nirley pups

The Nirley herself has had 2 tiny pups to Goliath, not expected but along they came. a tricolour bitch and dog, still very tiny but feisty as heck.

it appears as if the tinyness is extremely dominant in my strain.

I didn't register them but by gum they were snapped straight up by new owners.

A lovely family in roscommon town we are going to see a lot of:) being neighbours and they are mad for their jacks and another lovely and really interesting lady from moscow living in Dublin and married to an Irish fella.

God you meet some of the loveliest people through dogs:) Some not so nice too but i do find i meet less of them as i go on, or maybe i frighten them off i don't know:0

I am a teensy bit fanatical about the dogs but its worth it. Moscow lady is thrilled she has a tiny dog because he can travel home to Moscow and back easily with her when she goes back home to family for a bit.

I know what she is saying a very small dog can travel as 'hand luggage' on some european flights and many internal US ones. It must be a great advantage.

this is nearly a nirley, Daughter of the mighty Goliath and Bailielands Cup Of Coco. She is 3 months old in this pic taken last Friday week and went to her new home with such a lovely lady and her family in Enfield.

We are so fond of nirley, she was with us some time and really does look like her great-aunt the Nirley herself.

Nearly a Nirley is clearly a miniature like Nirley and Nugger and will be WAY UNDER 10", most likely 7 to 8" and 7lb weight, so I didn't register her as I do believe the standard is the standard :) 10 to 12". Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander :)

I do think the odd undersize one has slipped through on me from time to time but i'm getting really good at spotting them now :) I don't register them but they are far more highly prized than the normal ones, everyone loves teeny jacks and by God they are cute. i certainly couldn't do without my Nugger, she's as close to me as any person ever has been. Actually we are so close its almost telepathic, I think of her and she comes running from even another room :) Freaky :)

In this post i wanted to emphasize the point again that our standard for the Glen is a maximum of 35lb at 14" at shoulder for dogs and bitches accordingly less. No amount of justifying will change the maths if your dog is outside this he is too big for the breed. If judges continue to ignore this simple statement of size it only further reinforces the perception of show driven breeding as faddy and fickle. Worse the glen people out there are ignoring their own standard every time they choose a show winner who is outsize to breed to rather than a correct dog.

This is a clear warning from me here and now.

if you breed a achrondoplastic breed heavier and bigger you are inviting serious structural defrormity and weakness. the breed as a very robust healthy and strong working dog has knocked around for some time here in ireland, but by changing it, making it bigger, heavier in bone, it is becoming clumsy, weak and prone to joint problems.

Let us consider the English Basset, once a French hunting hound... The English Bulldog once a bullbaiting terror.... bred by show people heavier and heavier and what have we got today.

Just a word to the wise, the standard has given us a clear enough picture of what Glens were in their heyday of strength and vigour. Lets keep it and not go changing it again as was done in the 90's to suit certain people's dogs and ignoring the breed as a whole.

Don't matter to me other than when I'll need an outcross to freshen up the line, I'm going to find it pretty hard to find some actual glens out there, some of these so called Glens are like another breed from the Irish type.

Plus just because a dog is bred in Ireland does not make it Irish if its breeding is mostly from overseas kennels, its not like people you know :) we get citizenship by getting born somewhere but a dog is Irish bred if he has Irish lines period.

Not all 'Irish' glens are Irish at all, especially not in type or form.

Yes we know the show strain is far too big to work, eh hem !!! Who has a 25lb fit weight bitch who works just fine?

Yes we know the use of a pulling dog is completely unnecessary.

There is no need for the hacking dog with a proper sized Glen.

Yes we know the Teastas was a staged event.

But Mr. Burns is a long long way away and he does his thing and that's great.

He is dead right of course about the need to be careful and keep away from all sorts of dodgy carry on.

But i'm sorry to say that there still are working strain Glens registered and unregistered and where people can get them, the next best thing, Glen crosses.

Terriermen will not spend money on a dog if they can help it, if you give them a Glen, great! If you send one out on working loan, glad to have it, and most commonly preferred option is to breed what they have to a Glen or Glen cross.

Its all about money !!!

The terriermen who have money to spend will of course spend it on something fancy from abroad, that's called grass is greener syndrome and its an Irish Institution.

You want people to know you have something different to them and you want people to know you are better than them too :)

There is a lot of pride and arrogance in certain Irish circles and some terriermen you cannot talk to at all, they know everything apparently and will listen to nothing and look at nothing except what fits their point of view.

In Ireland you'll hear about strong black dogs, this is a type of black fell bred very big to do what a Glen can. It is still is at most about 25lbs. The 35lb Glen is an extremely large terrier for working a hole, so big its real purpose explains itself.

There is often Glen crossed into these big black dogs and wheaten blood too.

Pure bred IKC Glens are rarely seen in the field because most terrier folks will not spend big money on a dog, most will not spend any money at all!

Within the terrier community people just swap dogs in lieu of pups and most people have an allergy generally to parting with money :)

Offer a pure bred sporting strain IKC Glen on working loan and see how many folks jump at the chance of having one and sit back and see what a good dog will do.

We're not going to get drawn into a further discussion of what people do with their dogs, but I can tell you patterdales are cheaply got and easily, mature quickly and breed easily.

Glens are expensive, rare, slow to mature and not so easy to breed.

Irish people do not appreciate what they have either,we are generally a nation of serial moaners who feel its too wet, its too dry. This government's crap, the next one is crap.

Irish dogs did well enough for us when we got get nothing else but along come the days of easy travel, oh no, we all had to have fancy dogs from somewhere else.

Don't believe me, well all the irish terrier breeds fell into small favour here as pets when fancy foreign dogs became available, perhaps because people would recognise you had a pedigree dog not a hairy mutt (!)

And for gundogs same thing and working terriers same thing.

We as a nation are generally never satisfied with what we have, we have to fiddle with things to make it different from what we have, we have to have something different from the same fella, because the same same old no matter how good in day to day terms is never good as some one else's ;)

This is part of why the Glen is rare to date, but I know for a fact that working Glens are increasing and their crosses, being different now to what else is out there, they have a novelty appeal and where they are found to be worthwhile, they are kept and bred into the rest of the terriers out there.

The Irish way is work to work. tall to short, don't matter, rough to smooth, don't matter, if it does it does. And yes the modern breeds are artificial constructs out of the general mass of Irish terrier types that would have been out here.

I am worried about the spiralling inbreeding that has come about, in fact I'm getting pretty panicky about it .... open the register !!!!!!!

A GOOD START IS HALF THE WORK

i think i got that saying correct but i'm sure you get the gist of it.

My goodness last entry October 22 08 !

Isn't that a long time ?

Well since then christmas has come & gone and a new year begun, and begun very well for us here at bailielands.

Here's a quick catch up on the news.

Goliath our very large belgian import has turned out a very good foxing dog in cover.

He's the one in the back behind the parson's russell a fantastic bitch called Molly.

Bailielands Annie was mated to him around Christmas, we'll see how things develop.

Been busy doing a lot of training lately. Have a couple of sheep maulers in for rehab at he moment, amazing how well the ecollar works on that sort of a problem and to think the english KC is trying to actually ban them in the UK. It saves dog's lives. Have retrained over 15 dogs for stock worrying using the ecollar as part of the training and it works, otherwise said dogs be destroyed.

Also training up some young terriers in cover at the moment in preparation for next season's ground work.

Here's a smasher of a pup, grandson of Bailielands Bruce, named Ballyclare Fionn, bred by Enda Buckley, look at the head and shoulders and paws, he is only 5 wks in this picture.

Recession is biting hard here in Ireland and we've gone all self sufficienty.

Cranberry & Sauce the turkeys were delicious, we had Sauce she was fabulous and gave Cranberry to friends for Christmas. it was simply the most delicious turkey we had ever eaten, so tender, juicy and full of flavour. We weren't sure we could go through with actually getting them done in & eating them until the very end, we surprised ourselves.

We're growing our own again next year, but this time i'm buying in some bronze or wild turkey eggs for hatching and rear em from scratch.

Following hat success, one of the French Copper Black Marans has started to lay, here's one of her eggs with a creamy tinted and a normal brown egg.

That was the first maran egg and a little pale compared to the ones that followed.

These three are 2 maran eggs on the left and a normal ISA Brown egg on the lower right, note the difference in yolk colour and they were Yum!

Now in preparation for hatching the maran eggs when both hens get into their stride, i have practised using some ISA Brown X eggs, we plan to fatten and eat the cockerels and see how the hens turn out for eggs.

Also we have bought a pair of meat rabbits, New Zealand x Californians, a doe and a buck and they are distressingly cute, so i wonder how this experiment in self sufficiency will turn out :-)

That's a start on the goss for the new year anyway. Plenty more to come with much to do this new year bringing on Sandybanks Siobhan, now 8 months and Bailebroc Ziggy now 4 months old.

What Way Now?

What way now for the Glen?

I urge you to think about this sincerely. If the direction of the Glen is to be influenced by the show winners, then you are putting the breed under the judgement of men & women who are merely generic show judges.

is it not enough to see how many breeds have been destroyed by the ongoing pressure of show driven breeding? Why does the glen an already rare breed have to be driven down further?

Please i urge you to start training & testing your dogs for the field, show champion or not and start selecting for the best workers, the hardest workers, the easily handled dogs at the dig, the fittest and healthiest dogs after a hard day in the damp and the chill.

it may show you something that ma transmute your breeding programme into a drive for health in the raw & vital sense, health of body & mind.

If you do not actively select for these traits it is pot luck if you get them. Work with terriers will help you select, you see how coat quality, dog aggression, size, build, agility, courage, inquisitiveness, obedience, stamina, hardiness and physical overall fitness affect a living breathing dog. Not one of many to be made up, please!

Don't think i live in an absolute vacuum. I have many serious show people mates & friends. That is their path, work & performance is mine. But show breeding degenerates a dog, body & mind, INEVITABLY. Please even if you show enthuasiastically consider selecting for performance.

None of us breeders, work or show or pet are perfect.

but please let us make every new generation of glens better than the last, body & mind.

Amn't i a fool?

Do i live under a rock or not?

Isn't Harry O'Donoghue the man who judged Glens over the states a fair bit this year, don't tell me you Glen Folks didn't know about his petshops in the North East of Ireland, where pedigree and non-pedigree pups have been sold for years.

Now i'm out of Dundalk about 3 years now so i don't know if it still goes on, but i can easily check.

You see the hypocrisy of it gets me, that breed club ethics and kennel club ethics advise against puppy sales from pet shops over and over, AND as an ex pet shop owner who DID sell puppies from my own shop i can tell you why it really is a bad thing.

The pet shop puppy is more likely than not to be an impulse buy, not thought through, a pity purchase... because there is something absolutely wretched about seeing puppies in a pet shop.

Now the puppies i sold were bred by myself and taken home each night to their mums and often spent a fair amount of time loose around the shop with us, but that doesn't excuse us from doing what is not good practise.

Because as you good dog owners and breeders know out there getting the right home for your dog isn't just a matter of getting the money out of someone, you have a lot of matching up to do between your dog's requirements for a happy, healthy well loved life and what this person can offer the dog.

This CANNOT be done in a petshop where you are pressed for time no matter how sincere you are about doing right by the pups. So yes it more than likely goes wrong, a puppy bought out of pity in a petshop, it is more likely to not work out, to be sold on, passed on, end up in a pound.

And oh deary me, you didn't know this is what Harry O'Donoghue had been doing for years and now his sons continued doing in the 3 shops across the northeast up to 3 years ago at least. Harry was well known as a bulk buyer of litters across the area and believe me the pups were often sold at very high prices compared to the going rate of the times.

Well we live and learn but i'm glad i'm out of the petshop game, its not what you think, its all about money and if you are honest, sincere and genuinely care about pet welfare, you won't last in pet retail, its a jungle out there!

Here's someone you haven't met or heard of before,

COOKIE MONSTER.

Cookie Monster is our African Spurred Tortoise we imported from Spain shortly after her hatching about 5 years ago i think.

In those days surprise, surprise we ran a pet shop in Dundalk the North East of ireland.

We set up in 2001 as Dundalk Aquariums & Aquatic Supplies in Bridge St., Dundalk during the heart of the Foot & Mouth Crisis.

It did so well we upgraded to Williamson's Mall & Mega Pets 8 months later. In MegaPets version1 we did very well, now importing our own tropical fish from malaysia, africa, singapore & china, our quarantine fish room was 150 x 20 gallons, we had Penang Discus & Malawi & Tanganikan cichlids, it was heaven for a fishophile. We kept small animals, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, chinchillas, pet birds, african greys, cockatoos, canaries, budgies, finches & then exotic reptiles....

First we bought off a pair of reptile dealers, Martin & Paddy from Tyrone, who sold us out to their competion fairly quickly, later we learned to buy direct & cheaper hence COOKIE MONSTER who i bought for myself direct from a farm in Spain.

Soon we decided to get an even bigger premises for MegaPets and we took another unit in the Shopping Centre, even bigger and spent a fortune creating an EXOTIC ANIMAL ROOM a sort of small town zoo for displays and teducational tours of our diverse exotics. We took in an investor & foolishly despite teething problems pressed on.

Well yes it all went pear shaped, we indeed are not business people as we were so often told, just animal lovers.

Well we learned a lot!

We enjoyed caring for the many animals the wonderful fish & reptiles & small animals!

We learned you can sell PUPPIES FROM YOUR PETSHOP FOR YEARS & YEARS, that you buy in by the litter for cheap.... if you are a certain person, well respected in the IKC & KC, with a famous prefix known for Cruft's level Fox Terriers & Lakelands....a judge also i fear, may have judged Glens too, & i assure you what does this man know about glens???????

A New day Breaking

After the misery of nursing & losing Timmy and Wolfie its been a relief to feel a new day breaking and the somber mood here starting to lift.

First of all this morning i went for a nice brisk walk with roxie the rottie nothing too long, about 20 mins up the road & back, we took some pictures

Then out went the orpington babies who are no longer chicks but fully feathered little chickens in the miniature.

Fed the turkeys, Cranberry & Sauce, think they are a cock & a hen, its very debatable whether we'll get round to eating them as 2 were bought so the one for christmas wouldn't be lonely, guess that says it all...

And Peter caught one of the Khaki Campbell Ducklings now 4/5 weeks so i could take her picture & cuddle her.

Put out the babies then, glen babies and jack babies, both litters about the same age, 6/7 weeks now.

Fluzzy checked out the puppies, our newest rescue case, by gum that's a story.

HEART-BROKEN

On 9th october Wolfie, Gerrardstown Wolfgang was put to sleep. He had lymphoma all through his body & bones, he was only 3 in August.

At first pneumonia was suspected, then poisoning by weedkiller when he failed to respond to the usual medications. When he was xrayed & bloods examined the truth was found he had incurable cancer.

We're still destroyed.

He was a lovely mannerly dog, who grew out of a boisterous dog-aggressive young dog hood into a mannerly gentleman. He was affectionate & obedient to myself to the extent that he did not accept any other masters. he was a one person dog. He was a proven worker of such speed & efficiency that had been rarely seen in recent glenhood. He was a return to the glories of old. Dubhie is lost without him, they were like a wee married couple.

He's gone now & i miss him dearly. wee wolfie

Misunderstanding.

A very wet couple of weeks it has been.

However Misty's litter turned 8 weeks on Saturday. One blue bitch pup is in Belfast, another in Dublin. Banphrionsa Bui is staying with us.

Bailielands Danny has gone out to Pat & Shirley Mc Sweeney, hopefully to become a fitting stud dog for their two glens.

Sandybanks Daniel has come out to us in return, Siobhan's big strapping brother, we'll possibly run him on & see what happens.

Summer is fading away & Autumn aproaching. I hope to get out with Wolfie & Dubhie good & often this season as i now have my Bellman & Flint terrier locator, a really fascinating bit of kit, adapted from equipment for finding people lost in avalanches! Had to be really careful last season with an old Deben 1 & completely mute dogs. Divorce would have been unavoidable if anything happened to Wolfie & Dubhie.

Such excitement here in Ireland & UK regarding the BBC programme 'Pedigree Dogs Exposed' shown last tuesday night. i didn't see it but wish i had. Certainly didn't miss the articles in Our Dogs, the Irish Times, most of the papers & of course online articles and comments.

where the author posts on his working dogs and many many other issues. Though the author has a very low view on Glens & mere occasional diggers like myself i enjoy his blog very much and am challenged & educated by it. He's had a lot to say on this BBC programme and has already posted many times on the travesties made out of many breeds by showbreeding, healthwise, temperament wise and appearance wise. If you read the above scientific articles especially Population Structure & Inbreeding.... and A New Direction... you'll be in for an education.

Worrying me a lot lately is the growing lack of genetic diversity in our Irish Glens, some of the papers explain the Inbreeding Co-efficient values quite well and looking at pedigrees now, most of the dogs around are all more of the same. But to most Irish Glen breeders, breeding to non-Irish bloodlines is a perilous option.

So what to do? Some working strains of patterdale & fell terrer are closely inbred at present, unhealthy, unsound or non-workers are removed from the gene pool by culling or neutering. Breeding only from good gene dogs increases the probability of good gene dogs in each subsequent litter and removes bad genes as they occur. But what to do about faults that show later in life such as PRA turning up at 4 and 5 yrs of age, after breeding as usually occurred and the bad genes passed on...

It is so difficult to get PRA screening done here with 1 vet available for the entire country and he based in Dublin. Do hope the club might arrange a clinic.

For though here in Ireland, the Glen seems mostly a very hardy healthy dog with no dogs i can think of going blind early among the many i know or have known, internationally the breed appears rife with it.

Time for testing, i think...

At Home & Abroad.

At home things have settled down a little. Misty's pups and Sona's pup are begun eating solids & are packing away soaked Red Mills Racer & fresh raw lamb.

Away from home a Glen is in trouble. A male is in Ashtown Pound due to be destroyed on Tuesday. We're trying to arrange to get him out. If you can help ring 00353-1-8383236 URGENTLY.

Below are 2 of the first things i put on the morning ;-) a training whistle & clicker.

This is the much loved treat ball. We often put the kibble for a dog's main meal into it & both glens, jacks and rotties enjoy bashing it around & snatching up the biscuits. It gives exercise, entertainment & boredom bashing in 1 go.

AN LA AR FHEABHAS.....An Excellent Day!

I started this post a few days ago & got no farther than the title, i got so busy. On Thursday off went Nanny & me to pick up not 1 but 3 glens for rehoming.

The first one in Tipperary was a bitch i had sold on allegedly to a good home for keeps, but ended up getting sold on again & was up for sale AGAIN within the space of about 6 months since leaving here. Her owner was emigrating so i bought her back. This is Cara, December Dawn out of Ballyfoyle Dawn by Ballyfoyle Fionn at Threetrout. I'll post her pic later. Her face when she saw me & later when i got her home to tommy had to be seen to be believed, she was so happy to see us & be home again i've kenneled her in with Bruce.

The other 2 over in Galway had been very naughty sheepkilling but luckily for them the farmer didn't demand to have them shot but accepted being paid for damages & the dogs being took away. Also luckily for them, i have the cure for sheep killers & they can look forward to learning a bit of manners.

That's it for now, must go & do some more work.

Happiness!

Well the link from the homepage on freewebs is working so i thought i'd throw up a few more pics.

This pic is Pippa, Cumbreck Tiny Pippa our generation 1 jack from Angela in Cumbria. Pippa is getting a little gray now & is done with having babies, but you can see how she has adopted (stolen) these ones! She won't let them go back to their mum at all.

This is a pic of Bailielands Danny at 3 weeks getting a kiss off the Nug. Nugger is very motherly too & loves puppies.

This is Bailielands Honey Pup(jack) & Sandybanks Siobhan (glen) playing beside one of the chicken runs. Siobhan is our latest new arrival, Bruce's daughter out of Knockroe Earball Fada. What a fine girl she is.

The other way.

Well i've used up all my free webspace on freewebs & have been waiting to upgrade my account to be able to post more pictures & new blogs.

But it occurred to me that there were plenty of free resources on the web, photobucket & blogger for example that were worth a try.

Perhaps they could carry the addons to my site if i build in links etc. So here goes.....

My new Bellman & Flint Terrier Locator system arrived about 2 weeks ago i think. I haven't dug with it yet, but we have tried it out on dogs running about the yard & so, to get a feel for it.

Word is it is the most excellent locator system to date.

With sterling weak against the euro it cost me about 392 euro including postage to Ireland.

The price of units has slightly increased since then i believe, not surprising everything is rising fast, the days of milk & honey for the Celtic Tiger are over.

Now about Sona, she has 1 lovely male pup, a blue/brindle hopefully destined to stay in the west of Ireland & here he is...

He is just 3 weeks old in these pictures.

He possibly may be known as Bailielands Danny, we'll see or maybe Bailielands Daniel or Danny Boy.

Misty's litter were 3 weeks old this weekend & are very very noisy indeed.

That'll do us for now, i'll be busy trying to link this to website for 2 nite
